Canada Transformed: 150 Years Later
Happy Canada Day!
Canada, on its 150th birthday is a vastly different place. We have moved from the status of being under British rule, to being a completely independent and sovereign nation. While this evolution has, of course, also included major events in other areas (politics, military, and so on) the most important legal steps have been in the form of both statutory and common (“judge-made”) law.
Criminal Law, for example, has changed drastically. The first Criminal Code was enacted in 1892, and over the years, the Criminal Code of Canada has been amended multiple times in order to keep up with new situations which were not contemplated in the past.
Canada’s political nationhood is an ongoing process that requires constant negotiation and dialogue if we are to continue to live together. Events like Canada Day and Canada 150 provide opportunities to engage in discussions and educate Canadians about the evolution of the country’s past, the situations we are currently facing as a nation, and our visions for the future. Canada has come along way over the last 150 years. Laws have not only changed for the better, but it has also shown us the meaning of what it means to be Canadian.
Happy 150th Birthday Canada! Thank you for allowing us to call this beautiful place home.
